Exploring Leading Chinese Backpack Manufacturers: Quality and Innovation in OEM and Own Brands

The Chinese backpack manufacturing industry is a dynamic landscape filled with a plethora of brands and factories, each contributing to the global fashion ecosystem.

New Xiuxiu

OEM Brands: Samsonite, Diplomat, Calvin Klein, DELSEY, TUMI, etc.

Own Brand: Newcom

Despite the similar name, New Xiuxiu and Samsonite only share a connection through their business relationship—New Xiuxiu is one of Samsonite’s OEM manufacturers. New Xiuxiu Group is located in Pinghu, Jiaxing, Zhejiang. Besides being renowned for its casual wear and down jackets, Pinghu is also known for its thriving bag industry, mainly focused on exports. The region is home to hundreds of bag manufacturers, producing over a hundred million bags annually. Industry giants like New Xiuxiu, Ginza, and AMEDEO have also emerged from this area.

As a leading enterprise in China’s bag industry, New Xiuxiu Group holds several prominent positions: it chairs the China Leather Association’s Luggage Committee and heads the Bag Industry Associations of both Jiaxing and Pinghu. It ranks third among the country’s key bag manufacturers by annual sales revenue and has held the top spot in Zhejiang’s bag industry for five consecutive years. New Xiuxiu manufactures for numerous renowned brands, including Samsonite, Diplomat, DELSEY, and TUMI, with Samsonite being one of its longest-standing partners.

In addition to OEM, New Xiuxiu has been actively developing its own brand strategy. The company launched its own brands, such as “Newcom,” “Around,” and “Sincer,” and has acquired legacy brands like “TianTian” and the German luggage brand “AIRLINE.” Furthermore, it secured the global license for the premium watersports brand “Hobie” for 20 years and became the exclusive distributor of Calvin Klein luggage in China.

Ginza

OEM Brands: ACE, Samsonite, DELSEY, Antler, RICARDO, WENGER, TUMI, Crown, etc.

Own Brands: Ginza (affordable line), Alumann (premium line)

Continuing with Pinghu’s luggage giants, Ginza was originally based in Wenzhou before relocating to Pinghu in 2003. The company produces over 6 million suitcases annually, making it one of the top domestic trolley case manufacturers by output. Ginza’s research and development capabilities are also impressive—it was one of the first companies in China’s trolley case industry to be recognized as a “National High-Tech Enterprise.” Like many companies in Pinghu, Ginza focuses primarily on exports, providing manufacturing services for top brands like Samsonite, Wenger, DELSEY, Titan, Antler, and Ricardo. Its products are sold in over 100 countries across Asia, the Americas, and Europe.

In addition to OEM, Ginza also offers original design services for brands and platforms such as Netease Yanxuan, JD.com, Suning, FILA, and Starbucks. The company follows a dual strategy of OEM and its own brands, achieving notable success in recent years, especially through online e-commerce channels.

AMEDEO

OEM Brands: Samsonite, DELSEY, Olympia, etc.

Own Brand: Travelhouse

AMEDEO, another major luggage manufacturer based in Pinghu, follows a similar trajectory to Ginza, with its origins in Wenzhou. The company initially operated under the name Fanta Luggage before relocating to Pinghu, a hub for the luggage industry. Although its scale is smaller compared to Ginza and New Xiuxiu, AMEDEO still produces over 2 million suitcases annually. It manufactures for well-known brands such as Samsonite, DELSEY, and Olympia. Additionally, AMEDEO owns its own brand, Travelhouse, which is sold both domestically and internationally.

Xiangxing

OEM Brands: Samsonite, WENGER, SWISSGEAR, TOTTO, HOLIDAY, FILA, PUMA, TARGUS, Adidas, etc.

Own Brands: TRAVEL PLUS, SUIESSWIN, COTS, Granite Gear, etc.

Xiangxing, headquartered in Fuqing, Fujian, is the world’s largest luggage manufacturer by production volume. It has been recognized as China’s top luggage export base. With a comprehensive luggage supply chain, Xiangxing operates 13 production plants and 161 production lines across Fujian, Anhui (Guanyi), and Hubei (Guanxin). The company specializes in OEM and ODM services for renowned domestic and international brands, producing over 100 million bags annually, most of which are exported. At its peak, it was said that one in every five bags worldwide was made by Xiangxing.

In addition to its dominance in the luggage industry, Xiangxing is a diversified enterprise group. It owns Huayuan Linen in Tongling, Anhui, one of the largest linen textile companies in China. Xiangxing also operates in sectors such as five-star hotels, healthcare (Southern Medical University Fuqing Hospital), culture, education, and real estate.

In terms of its luggage business, about 60% of Xiangxing’s production is for OEM, while 40% is dedicated to its own brands, which include “SUIESSWIN,” “GEM,” “COTS,” “HIGHLAND,” “SMART,” “WELLS WALLS,” and “LUMMA.” The company also acquired some of its former OEM clients, such as the U.S. high-end outdoor backpack brand Granite Gear and the Hong Kong-based travel brand TRAVEL PLUS. Additionally, Xiangxing holds the distribution rights for brands like “QUIKSILVER” and “DC” for their luggage products.

Zhengxiong

OEM Brands: Samsonite, American Tourister, RICARDO, Tripp, WENGER, OIWAS, Netease Yanxuan, Heys, Macy’s, etc.

Own Brands: ITP, WINWAY

Zhengxiong started in Huangyan, Taizhou, before moving to Foshan, and eventually settled in Heyuan, where it has grown into a large-scale enterprise with four manufacturing bases located in Guangdong (Heyuan), Zhejiang (Taizhou), Thailand, and Nigeria. Zhengxiong is particularly skilled in producing PP (polypropylene) suitcases, and its business predominantly focuses on OEM. The company has collaborated with over a hundred brands, making it a professional OEM/ODM manufacturer. While Zhengxiong is highly successful in its manufacturing partnerships, its own brand business remains minimal, contributing only a small fraction to its overall operations.

Dapai

OEM Brands: Samsonite, SWISS GEAR, NBA, KELME, DELL, IBM, COSTCO, etc.

Own Brand: Dapai

Hailing from Quanzhou, Fujian, Dapai is a major player in the backpack industry and has provided OEM services for many outdoor sports brands. Once a benchmark enterprise in the industry, Dapai enjoyed a shining moment of success, especially with its strong push for its own brand, “Dapai.” The company opened numerous stores and even went public overseas in 2008, with Chinese Olympic diver Tian Liang as its brand ambassador. However, despite this early success, Dapai’s momentum has since dwindled. Today, it is difficult to find Dapai products on major e-commerce platforms, signaling a decline in its once-prominent market presence.

Kairun

OEM Brands: NIKE, Decathlon, PUMA, Kipling, Vera Bradley, The North Face, Timberland, DELL, etc.

Own Brands: 90FUN, GUILD FORD

Kairun is the first and currently the only luggage company in China’s bag industry to be publicly listed on the A-share market. As a leading manufacturer in the domestic luggage industry, Kairun operates factories in Chuzhou, Anhui, and abroad in India and Indonesia (acquiring a Nike OEM factory in Indonesia). The company started with OEM business, primarily producing soft bags such as backpacks. Its original factory was located in Fengxian, Shanghai, before relocating to Chuzhou, often referred to as the backyard of the Yangtze River Delta.

A major turning point for Kairun came in 2015 when it partnered with Xiaomi to create the brand 90FUN, officially becoming part of Xiaomi’s ecosystem. The 90FUN line of bags quickly became a phenomenal success, dominating sales on e-commerce platforms for several years and consistently ranking as the top seller in its category.

Spart

OEM Brands: Samsonite, Calvin Klein, Targus, Adidas, DELL, etc.

Own Brands: Horizon 8, Riodoo

Based in Xiamen, Spart is another major player in the luggage industry, having started with foreign trade and exports. Over the years, the company has provided OEM services for numerous brands, including Samsonite, Adidas, New Balance, Targus, Beckmann, DELL, and HP, among others. Spart operates two major production bases: one in Xiamen and two in Cambodia.

In terms of own-brand development, Spart initially launched “Riodoo,” but the brand eventually lost momentum. Later, in collaboration with tech entrepreneur Luo Yonghao’s Smartisan Technology, Spart introduced the brand “Horizon 8.” Horizon 8 has gained attention for its sleek, minimalist design, which is visually appealing and timeless, with an elegant logo that complements its aesthetic.

Endian

OEM Brands: Samsonite, VERSACE, Chloé, YONEX, TUCANO, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Disney, etc.

Own Brands: ENDR (EnboShi), IBoth

Endian, located in Dongguan, Guangdong, specializes primarily in backpacks, with some production of fashion handbags as well. Dongguan is known for its handbag manufacturing, but Endian has carved out its niche in the backpack sector. The company, officially named Guangdong Endian Leather & Apparel Technology Co., Ltd., has been listed on the New Third Board and has over 20 years of experience in the bag industry. Endian has provided OEM services for many prestigious brands, including Samsonite, Versace (Home line), Chloé, and YONEX. They have also created custom branded bags for luxury car brands like Lamborghini and Ferrari, as well as for many Fortune 500 companies, producing employee and gift bags.

In terms of its own brands, Endian initially promoted “IBoth” and also launched a children’s backpack line called “ENDR.” The ENDR brand aims for the high-end market, similar to Japan’s premium school backpacks, which can easily cost over a thousand yuan due to their superior quality. Endian’s ENDR backpacks are positioned as premium products, with prices ranging from a few hundred to as much as seven or eight hundred yuan.

Binhao

OEM Brands: National Geographic, CAT, RICARDO, DELSEY, Samsonite, American Tourister, Lipault, Mandarina Duck, Disney, etc.

Own Brand: Binhao

Founded in 1996 and based in Dongguan, Binhao is another prominent player in the bag manufacturing industry. Like Endian, Binhao is listed on the New Third Board and focuses primarily on OEM services. The company has an annual output value of approximately 300 to 400 million yuan. Binhao manufactures for a variety of well-known brands such as Samsonite, RICARDO, Mandarina Duck, National Geographic, DELSEY, and more. While its own brand, “Binhao,” exists, it is not widely recognized by the general public.

Sitoy

OEM Brands: Prada, Coach, Lacoste, Michael Kors, Fossil, BALLY, Alexander Wang, Tory Burch, etc.

Own Brands: TUSCAN’S, Sitoy, a.testoni, Fashion & Joy

Sitoy is China’s largest luxury bag OEM and a global leader in leather goods manufacturing. This long-established, Hong Kong-based company has quietly operated in the handbag and luggage industry for over 50 years. Its production bases are mainly located in Dongguan and Yingde, with Dongguan being a significant hub for luxury brand manufacturing, especially for bags and footwear. Sitoy is listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange (stock code 01023) as of December 6, 2011, revealing its behind-the-scenes role in manufacturing for many luxury brands.

Coach is Sitoy’s largest client, and Prada is not only a customer but also a shareholder, a rare occurrence in the luxury industry. Other major brands Sitoy produces for include BALLY, Alexander Wang, Tory Burch, Michael Kors, and TUMI. Contrary to the belief that luxury brands don’t manufacture in China, many use Sitoy’s expertise to produce components that are later assembled in Italy or other countries to maintain a “Made in Italy” label, as is common in the luxury goods sector.

While Sitoy excels in manufacturing, its own brands, such as TUSCAN’S and a.testoni, haven’t gained significant traction. High-end products rely heavily on brand prestige, design, and marketing—areas where Sitoy, as a manufacturing specialist, faces challenges. Furthermore, consumers should not expect to buy the same products as Sitoy’s luxury clients directly from the factory. The luxury goods industry operates under strict controls, including raw material sourcing and quality management. Even factory employees must purchase the branded goods from retail outlets like any other consumer. As a result, claims of “factory-direct” luxury items or goods sold through “special channels” should be viewed with skepticism.

Ritai

OEM Brands: Prada, Coach, DB, Burberry, Michael Kors, Tory Burch, etc.

Own Brands: Not available

Ritai is a major Hong Kong-owned manufacturing company, specializing in producing high-end luxury bags. It operates several factories located in Dongguan and Qingyuan in China, as well as in the Philippines and Cambodia, with a total workforce of nearly 20,000 employees. Ritai is recognized as one of the leading OEM manufacturers for luxury brands, similar to Sitoy, with clients including Prada, Coach, Burberry, Michael Kors, and Tory Burch.

In addition to luxury bags, Ritai has diversified its business into various other industries, such as furniture, metal accessories, hotel and retail decor, and release paper manufacturing. Despite its size and industry presence, there is no available information regarding any self-owned retail brands, indicating that Ritai focuses primarily on OEM and B2B operations rather than consumer-facing business.

Vashi

OEM Brands: Coach, Michael Kors, Tory Burch, FOSSIL, Kate Spade, etc.

Own Brands: Not available

Vashi, one of the leading luxury bag manufacturers in Dongguan, is a prominent Hong Kong-owned enterprise specializing in high-end leather goods. Established in 1971, Vashi initially operated in Huizhou before relocating to Dongguan, where it now runs two major factories in Houjie and Daojiao. The Dongguan Vashi Leather Goods Co., Ltd., located in Daojiao, is one of the largest companies in the area.

With over 40 years of experience in leather goods manufacturing, Vashi produces a wide range of premium handbags, wallets, belts, and other leather accessories for some of the world’s most renowned brands, including Coach, Michael Kors, Tory Burch, FOSSIL, and Kate Spade. Despite its industry stature, no information is available regarding any self-owned brands, suggesting Vashi focuses exclusively on OEM services for luxury clients.

Tai Wah

OEM Brands: Prada, CELINE, BALLY, Miu Miu, LOEWE, MCM, etc.

Own Brands: CASA SISSI

Tai Wah is a Hong Kong-owned company founded in 1957, with a long history in the leather goods industry. The company operates multiple factories in Shenzhen and Dongguan, as well as overseas locations in Bangladesh and Cambodia. Tai Wah is a key OEM manufacturer for various luxury brands, producing handbags and accessories for renowned names such as Prada, CELINE, BALLY, Miu Miu, LOEWE, and MCM.

In addition to its extensive OEM business, Tai Wah has developed its own brand, CASA SISSI, which has a few retail stores. While not as widely known as the luxury brands it manufactures for, CASA SISSI reflects Tai Wah’s foray into the consumer retail market, offering its own range of leather goods. If anyone has come across or purchased from CASA SISSI, it would be interesting to hear about their experience.

Hongsheng

OEM Brands: NIKE, Kipling, TOUS, TUMI, etc.

Own Brands: FITRIGHT

Hongsheng is a Taiwanese-owned enterprise based in Dongguan, with manufacturing facilities located in Dongguan, Huai’an (Jiangsu), as well as overseas in Cambodia, Thailand, and Indonesia. The company specializes in producing a wide range of products, including luggage and fashionable bags, primarily focusing on high-end leather goods. Most of its products are exported to Europe and America.

Hongsheng serves as a significant OEM manufacturer for several well-known brands, notably being the largest producer of bags and sports equipment for NIKE. In addition to its OEM business, Hongsheng has developed its own brand called FITRIGHT. However, there seems to be limited visibility for FITRIGHT on e-commerce platforms, making it challenging to find products under this brand.
