Vegetable tanning delivers character, burnishing, and patina at the cost of water sensitivity and process time. Chrome tanning delivers softness, stability, and color range at the cost of compliance discipline. Aldehyde and synthetic routes fill specific needs, and most bag leather is a deliberate combination.

For production teams, the working rules are simple. Name the tannery, the primary tanning agent, the retanning, and the finish in writing. Keep a retained sample and signed spec sheet. Test Cr VI, tensile, and flex before bulk. Re-validate the line whenever tannage changes. Then match the promise — water resistance, aging, warranty — to the chemistry you actually bought.

Get tannage right, and the leather you approve in sampling is the leather your customers will still be carrying years later.
